RESOURCES

Earth & Sky

Earth & Sky produces short daily radio shows on a range of environmental topics. In just 90 seconds, hosts Deborah Byrd and Joel Block usually interview a scientist or resource manager on the air and always explain the day’s topic in easily understood language.

Since 2002, Project Learning Tree has partnered with Earth & Sky so teachers can “virtually” bring a guest scientist into their classroom by using Earth & Sky radio shows in conjunction with PLT activities.  All PLT activities have connections to one or more Earth & Sky radio shows.

Learn how to find and use an Earth & Sky radio show in your classroom to engage your students in learning.

Urban and Community Forestry Education

Thanks to a grant from the National Urban and Community Forestry Advisory Council, teachers can search a database of resources that enhance your teaching of PLT activities related to urban and community forestry.  Get started!

Resources for PLT Activities

Go to Curriculum to find specific resources for each PLT activity.  Select a PLT PreK-8 guide book or secondary module as appropriate.  Click on each activity for an overview of the activity, its student pages, and a variety of resources.

In addition, check out the EE Resources section of PLT’s Branch newsletter.  Every quarter, PLT collects and publicizes new and current resources, grant opportunities, and items of professional interest relating to environmental education.  For each resource, we identify which PLT activity it supports.

Teaching Controversial Issues

Some teachers steer clear of controversy in the classroom and do not discuss environmental issues, which can be controversial, with students. Yet controversy can provide opportunities for increasing the quality of student thinking and problem solving. Have a look at some PLT tips for teaching controversial issues.
