The Unique Paper Company

Using PLT in the Classroom
About five years ago, while earning my master's degree, I took a science class during which I was certfied in Project Learning Tree, Project Wild and Project Wet. I have used the PLT for Pre-K to 8 book in my gifted elementary level science classes. Here's what we did this year. During a study of the environment and recycling, the students recycled paper from the teacher copy room and made beautiful sheets of handmade paper. The PLT provided all of the information necessary to complete this project. During our second unit of study this year, these same students (gifted first and second graders) were learning about economics and chose to start a company. Their idea - a paper company - The Unique Paper Company. Students made handmade gift cards to be attached to gift bags and packages. They named the colors: rainforest green, purple mountain majesties, denim blue jean, and perfect pink. After designing a simple web page, individual business cards, and order forms, the students sold the product to friends and family. Their profit: $450!!!! The students had decided before their first sale that if they made a profit, 50 percent would go to charity and 50 percent would stay in the classroom to purchase logic games. Two hundrded and twenty five dollars was donated to a Habitat for Humanity project. Our local high school has been raising funds all year to build this house for their high school custodian. The Unique Paper Company's donation will buy the front door, the toilet and a few other odds and ends. What a great service learning opportunity for these young entrepeneurs. Thanks for the activity guide that began it all! Kati Searcy, Elementary Teacher of Talented and Gifted, Mountain Park Elementary School, Roswell, Georgia
