We are deeply saddened by the sudden loss of our dear friend and colleague, Barbara Pitman. Barb’s passion for excellence in environmental education touched the lives of all who had the great fortune to know and work with her. She will be sorely missed for her warmth, compassion, and good humor, and for her dedication to the environmental causes about which she cared so deeply.
At the request of Barb’s family, Project Learning Tree has established a Memorial & Legacy Fund to honor her loving memory and to celebrate her decades-long commitment to environmental education.
We are profoundly saddened by the loss of Rudy Schafer, founder of Project Learning Tree. Rudy dedicated his life's work to environmental education and was a great inspiration to all of us. He was committed to helping teach young people "how to think, not what to think" about complex environmental issues. He said that "all of us involved in PLT share a great tradition. We do important things for students, the land, and for the future." This tradition and Rudy's impact will live on in the educators who bring PLT to their students every day. Your tax-deductible contribution in Barb or Rudy’s memory will support PLT’s Outstanding Educator Awards Program which celebrates and honors PLT educators who share Barb and Rudy’s enthusiasm for environmental education and high educational ideals.
