For the past ten years, Houlton High School outdoor education students have collected sap from trees on the school property, to make maple syrup. The production of syrup has helped the students learn about forests, forest products, and hard work.

With help from this 2009 GreenWorks! grant, students built a sugarhouse for sap storage and sugar production, sheltering them from the bitter cold Maine spring.  With the addition of the sugarhouse, learning can take place in a controlled environment.  The new sugarhouse also provides a space for tour groups and the general public to come learn about one of Maine's traditional forest industries.

The sugarhouse project utilized the expertise and help of several community partners, including local businesses, a local non-profit organization, and the Maine Forest Service.
