The start of a new school year is a wonderful time to take some advice from a pencil! It represents a time to “take note of what’s important” as intentions are set for a new school year. What story will you and your students tell?

Ideas for Your Classroom
Whether it’s apples, pencils, or animals, Advice from Nature poetry is a fun and approachable way for students to connect with the world around them and get inspired by the wisdom of nature. Explore the resources we’ve compiled to help get your students interacting with and exploring the wonders of nature from Day One!
For example:
- Pair the “Advice from a Pencil” poster for your classroom with PLT’s Activity 82 “Resource-Go-Round” that helps students learn about product life cycles, using a pencil as an example.
- Couple “Advice from the Sun” (available as a magnet or bookmark) with PLT’s Activity 18 “Tale of the Sun” that explores the wisdom from nature handed down by the Muskogee Tribe.
- Get some inspiration from “Advice from a Garden” in conjunction with these Easy Plant Science Experiments for the Classroom.
- Use “Advice from a Tree” to support PLT’s Activity 2 “Get In Touch with Trees”
- Pair “Advice from a Bicycle” (available as a magnet, bookmark, or postcard) with PLT’s Activity 53 “On the Move” that encourages students to investigate methods of transportation, including how students might get to school.
